Hello, this is JPEdLab.
Starting today, “Japan Today in 90 Seconds” begins.
On Mondays, we share last week’s news; on Wednesdays, trends in Japan; and on Fridays, information useful for travel and study abroad.
This is a special edition of our first episode.
Our topic is “Is 30 Minutes of Sleep a Day Really Enough?”
Daisuke Hori says that for about 17 years, he has slept only around 30 minutes a day.
There is also a sleep improvement program, which currently costs 165,000 yen, including tax.
Starting September 9, Hori began a seven-day YouTube livestream showing his life around the clock.
However, there was a moment when he appeared to fall asleep during a head spa treatment.
Hori explained, “It’s a brief sleep called microsleep.”
At peak times, tens of thousands of people watched the livestream at the same time.
However, this video alone cannot tell us his actual sleep duration or health condition.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends that adults get the sleep they need, using at least six hours as a guideline.
Also on September 9, Professor Masashi Yanagisawa and other sleep researchers received the Lasker Award, a prestigious international medical award.
By the way, how many hours do you sleep each day?
