Hello, this is JPEdLab.
Starting today, we’re launching “Japan Today in 90 Seconds.”
On Mondays, we’ll bring you news from the previous week. On Wednesdays, we’ll cover Japanese trends and entertainment. On Fridays, we’ll share useful information about travel, studying abroad, and life in Japan.
We’ll cover the same topics in two levels of Japanese: beginner and regular.
Our first episode is a special edition.
The topic is “Is Sleeping 30 Minutes a Day Really Possible?”
Daisuke Hori, head of the Japan Short Sleeper Development Association, publicly claims that he has slept for about 30 minutes a day for around 17 years.
The association’s official website currently offers a sleep improvement program for 165,000 yen, including tax.
As more people questioned his claims, Hori began a seven-day YouTube livestream on September 9, broadcasting his daily life around the clock.
During the stream, however, viewers pointed out several times that he appeared to fall asleep while receiving a head spa treatment.
Hori himself says it was microsleep.
The stream drew so much attention that tens of thousands of people watched at the same time.
Why did so many people watch?
One possible reason is that it became an interactive spectacle: viewers could comment in real time, check the footage, and consider together whether his claims were true.
However, this footage alone cannot be used to medically determine Hori’s actual sleep duration or state of health.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends that adults get the sleep they need, using at least six hours as a general guideline.
Coincidentally, on September 9, the day the stream began, Professor Masashi Yanagisawa of the University of Tsukuba and his colleagues received the prestigious Lasker Award for their research on orexin, which is involved in sleep and wakefulness.
Sleeping less gives you more time to use.
But can you really use that time feeling well? That’s the question this livestream invites us to consider.
By the way, how many hours do you sleep each day?
Try leaving a comment in Japanese.
