Hello, this is JPEdLab.
On this program, we bring you last week's G News on Mondays, Japanese trends and entertainment on Wednesdays, and useful information about travel, studying abroad, and daily life in Japan on Fridays.
This time, we’re sharing information about Silver Week that may be useful to people traveling or studying in Japan.
In 2026, there will be five consecutive holidays from Saturday, September 19, through Wednesday, September 23.
September 21 is Respect for the Aged Day, and September 23 is the Autumnal Equinox Day.
September 22, between those dates, is not a named national holiday.
However, because it falls between two public holidays, it becomes a day off under the provisions of the Public Holiday Act.
This will be the first time in 11 years, since 2015, that Silver Week has lasted five days.
NEXCO companies predict that during this period there will be a total of 279 traffic jams of 10 kilometers or longer on expressways across Japan.
This is a forecast, not a count of traffic jams that have actually occurred.
Shinkansen trains, flights, and hotels in popular tourist destinations may also be crowded.
If you’re traveling, book your transportation and accommodations early.
For international students, it’s also a good idea to check school schedules as well as the opening days of banks, city offices, hospitals, and other services.
Would you visit a famous tourist destination during a five-day break?
Or would you avoid the crowds and spend the time nearby?
Please tell us in the comments how you plan to spend your holiday break.
