Hello, everyone. This is JPEdLab.
On Fridays, we share useful information about studying in Japan and life there.
If you studied in Japan, would you like to try working part-time?
It can help with living expenses and give you opportunities to use Japanese.
However, you cannot work just on the basis of your student residence status.
So, what do you need?
The answer is permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under your status of residence.
Even after receiving this permission, you can generally work no more than 28 hours per week.
During long school holidays, you can work up to eight hours a day.
Next, let’s check the minimum wage.
Japan’s minimum wage is not the same nationwide; it varies by prefecture.
Under the national guideline for fiscal year 2026, if prefectures follow the guideline, the weighted national average will be 1,176 yen per hour.
However, this does not mean the rate is 1,176 yen everywhere in Japan.
Check the information for the relevant prefecture for the actual rate and start date.
The hourly wage is not the only thing to consider; distance from school, shifts, and whether you can balance work with your studies also matter.
Here’s a question for you.
Is the general limit of 28 hours per week necessary to protect international students’ studies?
Or should it be more flexible to reflect local living costs and each person’s circumstances?
Please write your reasons in the comments.
