Why are there so many red shrine gate tunnels like the ones we see in photos of Japan?
This red tunnel is Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
The thousand shrine gates grew from people’s prayers and gratitude.
Since the Edo period, people have offered shrine gates in the hope that their wishes would come true, or to give thanks when they did.
In other words, the scene in those photos brings together the wishes of many individuals.
When you walk through with that in mind, the surrounding passageways look different too.
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station.
The ride takes about five minutes.
The one-way fare for adults is 150 yen.
The shrine entrance is just a short walk from the station, and visiting is free.
Let’s continue to cherish this place, which is easy to visit.
Now, here’s a question.
Should tourists also help pay for the cost of preserving culture?
Please give it some thought.
