The price is the same.
But there is a little less food inside the bag.
Would this also count as a price increase?
Today, we’ll talk about food prices, based on news from Japan last week.
On September 30, Teikoku Databank, a company that conducts research on businesses, announced a new survey.
The survey covered 195 food companies in Japan.
There were 3,153 kinds of food and drinks whose prices were announced to be going up in October.
But not all food products become more expensive in the same way.
The new price varies from product to product.
So why do prices go up?
Ingredients such as wheat and oil are needed to make food.
Factories use electricity.
Finished products are transported to stores by truck.
When these costs increase, companies that make and sell products need more money.
This time, companies cited higher costs for ingredients, electricity, and transporting products as reasons.
The price of ingredients bought from other countries is another reason.
Prices in Japanese stores are connected to events around the world, too.
And there are things you can’t tell from the price alone.
That brings us back to the amount inside the bag I mentioned at the beginning.
For example, suppose a snack that used to contain 100 grams for 100 yen now contains 80 grams for 100 yen.
This is just an example to explain the idea.
The amount you pay is the same.
But what do you think?
You get less to eat.
If you want to buy the same amount, you need to spend more than before.
So when you shop, compare the price and the amount inside the package together.
Even a large bag can cost more than a small one when you compare the price for the same amount.
There’s one more important thing for people who will live or study abroad in Japan.
Don’t decide how much money you’ll need each month by watching only old travel videos.
Check the prices of things you often buy at nearby stores.
Comparing the same items, such as bread and milk, makes it easier to think about how much money you’ll need for your own life.
Even if fewer products are set to get more expensive from now on, that alone won’t bring prices that have already gone up back down.
Buyers are happier when prices are lower.
But the people who make and transport products need money, too.
Here’s a question for you.
If you worked for a company, would you want to avoid raising prices even in a situation like this?
Or would you raise them because you had no choice?
Or would you keep the price the same and reduce the amount?
Take a moment to think about it.
