Tamagotchi and the Fun of Raising a Pet

An introduction to Tamagotchi’s care-based play and a question about what it means to care for a digital creature.

Have you ever heard of a toy that takes so much effort, with daily feedings and even toilet care?
That toy is called Tamagotchi.
This year, Tamagotchi celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Born in 1996, Tamagotchi is a toy where you raise a pet on a screen.
On October 9, Bandai announced that it will hold a 30th-anniversary event in Harajuku and Shibuya starting November 7.
The event has not started yet.
Caring for a Tamagotchi involves feeding it and taking care of its toilet needs, and its character changes depending on how you raise it.
Alongside collecting things, I find it very interesting to look at Japan’s culture of cuteness through play that involves caring for and raising something.
However, the one you care for exists on a screen.
It is not real.
That is exactly why it can make you wonder what meaning that experience has.
What do you think?
Do you think caring for a digital creature helps develop a sense of responsibility toward living things?
Or should we think of it as separate from caring for a real creature?
Please take a moment to think about it.
