From everyday words to difficult combinations

This free Japanese vocabulary test checks whether you can choose the right word in a real sentence, not just recognise it. Each round has 12 multiple-choice questions written by JPEdLab and adapts between five difficulty bands labelled N5 to N1.

Twelve questions. Where will they take you?

  1. 1

Start at N3. Two correct answers in a row move you up; an incorrect answer moves you down.

  2. 2

Read the explanation after each answer to see why the word fits.

  3. 3

Check your challenge score, review tricky words and invite a friend to try.

Five difficulty bands

N5Everyday essentials
Food, time, places and the actions you use every day.
N4Everyday situations

N3Meaning in context
More detailed situations and words that need a closer look.
N2Natural combinations

N1Subtle distinctions
Demanding collocations, nuanced meanings and careful word choice.

About this vocabulary quiz

Is this an official JLPT test?

No. These are original practice questions by JPEdLab. N5–N1 labels are our difficulty guides, not official JLPT vocabulary classifications. The quiz does not predict a JLPT score, a pass or how many Japanese words you know.

Can a friend try my challenge?

Yes. Share your result link to invite a friend to a challenge with the same starting setup. Their answers may lead to different questions and difficulty bands. You can also save a result image. The link includes the score, result band and challenge setup, without your name or individual answers.

What usage information is recorded?

We count quiz starts, completions, sharing actions and vocabulary-link clicks in our existing server logs. These events contain only the action, interface language, difficulty or result band, broad score range and whether you opened a shared challenge. They do not include your name, account details or individual answers. No analytics cookies are added.
