どこの〜doko no ~
ask where from
Use 「どこの〜」 to ask where something comes from; context may point to its maker, shop, or cuisine.
How it works

Look at the arrow: where is the wine from? Use 「どこの+noun」 to ask where something comes from.

Put 「の」 after 「どこ」, then add a noun. To answer, replace 「どこ」 with the name of the place or source.

When asked where the wine is from, you can answer France or Italy. Keep 「の」 after the country name, too.

「どこの服ですか」 can also ask which shop the clothes came from or what brand they are.

Whether the question asks about the place of production, shop, or brand depends on the context. A brand does not always tell you where something was made.

「どこの料理ですか」 asks where a dish is from—for example, which country’s cuisine it belongs to.

「どこですか」 asks where something is. 「どこの+noun」 asks where it comes from.
