〜は何階ですか~ wa nan gai desu ka
Wa nan gai desu ka (〜は何階ですか) means “asking which floor”.

Use 「〜は何階ですか」 to ask which floor a place is on; answer with a number and 「階です」.

How it works
When looking for a restaurant in a building, use 「何階ですか」 to ask which floor it is on. Look at the picture: which floor is the restaurant on?
First name the place you are looking for, then add 「は何階ですか」 to ask which floor it is on.
Answer with a number followed by 「階です」. 「受付は二階です」 means “The reception desk is on the second floor.”
If it is clear that the question is about the restaurant, you can leave out the place and simply answer 「三階です」.
In the question, 「何階」 is read 「なんがい」. Here, 「階」 is read 「がい」.
「二階」 is read 「にかい」, and 「三階」 is read 「さんがい」. Notice how the pronunciation changes with the floor number.
Before asking a staff member for directions, say 「すみません」. After they answer, say 「ありがとうございます」.
Listen again to the question about the restaurant and the answer about the reception desk. For the same 「階」, you hear がい first, then かい.
