How it works

What time does school start and end? Look at both ends of the timeline to see the school hours.

The left end marks the start time. 「から」 means “from” and follows the start time.

The right end marks the end time. 「まで」 means “until” and follows the end time.

Say the start time first, then the end time: time+から+time+までです.

This pattern tells us “from what time to what time.” It does not directly answer “how many hours in total.”

Distinguish morning from afternoon. The picture shows a start at 「午前8時」 (8 a.m.) and an end at 「午後4時」 (4 p.m.).

To ask about the whole time interval, replace both times with 「何時」, as in the question about school hours in the picture.

To ask only what time the hospital opens, use 「何時からですか」. You can also give just the start time.
