How it works

Before a trip, you may want to know how long it takes. Look at the arrow and question mark between the two cities.

から marks the starting point; まで marks the destination: leaving Tokyo and arriving in Beijing.

Add どのくらいですか after the two places to ask roughly how long the journey takes.

四時間 means a duration of four hours; 四時 means four o’clock. Answer a question about travel time with a duration.

くらい after a number means “about.” ぐらい has the same meaning; you do not need to be exact to the minute.

This question can also ask how far apart two places are. For distance, answer in units such as kilometers.

どこ asks “where”; どのくらい asks about an amount or extent. Here, we want to know how far or how long the journey is.

In the conversation, 大阪から東京は makes the Osaka-to-Tokyo journey the topic. It also asks how long that journey takes.
