How it works

Use 「あります」 for objects and buildings, and 「います」 for people and animals. Look at the bank and dog in the picture.

To say what is in a place, name the place first. Put 「に」 after it to mark where something or someone is.

After the place, name the person or thing there and add 「が」. The order is: place, person or thing, verb.

「銀行は」 introduces where the bank is. 「右手側に」 introduces what is on the right.

Even if the white dog in the garden is sitting still, use 「います」. Choose the verb based on what kind of thing you are talking about.

The bank is on the right and the hotel is on the left. Here, left and right depend on the direction the speaker is facing.
