How it works

The woman in the picture lives in an apartment in Tokyo. Use this pattern to say where you live.

「住んでいます」 means you currently live there. It tells us where your home is, rather than simply where you are at this moment.

Put a place noun before 「に」. A country, city, or apartment can all indicate where you live.

To say where you live, add 「に」 after the place. It connects your home location to 「住んでいます」.

Here, 「住」 is read 「す」. The full expression 「住んでいます」 is read 「すんでいます」.

In the dialogue, 「東京のアパート」 is one phrase meaning “an apartment in Tokyo.” Add 「に」 after the whole phrase.

In the examples, Japan and Tokyo both tell us where someone lives. One names a country, the other a city, so the areas differ in size.
