How it works

When planning a trip together, use 「ましょうか」 to suggest renting a car, then wait for a reply.

If the other person needs a hotel booking, the speaker can use 「ましょうか」 to offer to make it for them.

Both uses ask what the other person wants. After suggesting an idea, listen to whether they agree.

Replace the verb’s final 「ます」 with 「ましょうか」: 借ります→借りましょうか.

「始めましょう」 suggests starting. Adding 「か」 also asks whether the other person agrees.

Who acts depends on the situation: booking a hotel can be a joint suggestion or an offer by the speaker to handle it.

When offering help, the meaning is “Shall I do it?” You are not asking the other person to do it—check who helps whom.
