How it works

Use this gentle request to ask a shop assistant to show you an item. Which bag is the customer pointing at?

The shop assistant shows the item, and the customer receives help. You are asking the other person to do something for you.

Use the verb’s て-form, then add 「もらえませんか」. For example, 「見せる」 becomes 「見せて」.

To ask the shop assistant to bring out another bag, say 「別のカバンを出してもらえませんか」.

Although it contains 「ません」, the whole sentence means “Could you… for me?” It does not say that the other person will not do it.

When approaching someone, say 「すみません」 before making your request to sound more polite.
