How it works

The same person tries on two shirts. Which is too big? Size L is bigger than he needs.

「すぎます」 means “too…”. It goes beyond a suitable degree and often feels unsuitable.

When the price is more than you can accept, say 「これは高すぎます」. It means it is too expensive.

Look at how the endings change in the picture: keep the adjective stem, then add 「すぎます」.

Remove the final 「い」 from an い-adjective: 大きい→大きすぎます. Do not keep 「い」.

Use the stem of a な-adjective directly: 静か→静かすぎます. Do not put 「な」 or 「です」 in between.

「とても大きい」 only stresses that something is very big. 「大きすぎます」 also means it is bigger than is suitable.

If it does not fit after you try it on, you can explain why by saying 「すみません、大きすぎます」.

To ask for a size that fits, follow up with 「Mサイズをお願いします」.
