How it works

When meeting someone for the first time or at an interview, start by formally giving your name. Who is introducing himself in the picture?

Use 「と申します」 to introduce yourself humbly. It is more formal than 「です」.

Put your own name directly before 「と申します」. There is no need to add 「は」.

When telling someone your name, do not add 「さん」 after your own name.

「申します」 is read 「もうします」. Learn it as a whole expression for introducing yourself.

The example gives the speaker’s name first, then explains the purpose of the visit. 「山田と申します」 states the speaker’s own name.
