How it works

To decide whether to join the event, first check the details, then make your decision. Notice the order in the picture.

The check prepares you for the decision that follows. The emphasis is on completing a necessary step first, rather than just listing actions in order.

Use the verb’s た-form + 上で. For example, 「確認する」 becomes 「確認した上で」.

The 「で」 after 「上」 can sometimes be omitted. In this lesson, first learn 「上で」 as used in the example.

The example gives guidance for what to do next. 「た」 means the check must be completed first; it does not say the check has already happened.

After checking, decide whether to participate. You can also decide not to join; checking does not mean agreeing to take part.
